A biopic about Maria Schneider, the actress best known for the film Last tango in Paris, opposite Marlon Brando. And the much discussed and infamous scene in that film that would define her entire life. And above all, it would be a burden that she had to bear. Especially a story that deserves to be told, but still quite well done. Starring Anamaria Vartolomei in the title role, who has previously won prizes with the even better L'Événement.

The film also takes the time to show how that one film scene came to be. Matt Dillon is quite convincing as Marlon Brando, not an obvious role to play. There is no real impact, but the story says enough. And we will undoubtedly hear much more from Vartolomei.

Good half movie. Up until that one scene the movie is captivating and especially tight in terms of script. The movie is clearly working towards something. And slowly the tension is built up but also Schneider is brought there as a small inexperienced girl to the big names Brando and Bertolucci. Also visually brought with captivating shots of Maria who stays behind in the bathtub and nobody cares about her or a shot of her between the two big men. Very well done. Also helped by a great Anamaria Vartolomei. She knows how to achieve a lot with her looks. Sadness and loneliness the best.

But then it's all over. Then, in very broad brushstrokes, half a life is told, which does indeed have a link with the butter scene (the film suggests that that one scene ruined her life), but that part still feels like loose sand, especially because of the episodic nature (suddenly we've arrived at the end of the 70s with Talking Heads on the soundtrack). Another factor is that the dramatic climax has already happened. A lot could have been done with this, if the butter scene had been the catalyst to tell the actual story, but then at least another 50 minutes of film would have been needed to really create a character sketch without that loose episodic structure with far too big time jumps to really maintain a connection. 3.0*.

Good film about a young woman who manages to get a role in a film with a famous Hollywood actor. Not really a standard biopic about the actress Maria Schneider, but more about how one scene changed her life. And that one scene is movingly portrayed. Anamaria Vartolomei knows how to carry the film well and Matt Dillon knows how to convince as Marlon Brando. A small 3.5 stars.
