Moving, very uniquely designed documentary about the Norwegian Mats Steen, who died at the age of 25 from a degenerative muscle disease. After his death, his grieving parents discover what their son meant to the digital community in which Mats spent thousands of hours. It takes some getting used to the colorful fairytale world of World of Warcraft that is sporadically used to visualize Mats' ideas, but in the end it works. The documentary is a bit too long and occasionally threatens to become repetitive, but because of the many beautiful moments and the positive tone of the whole, you are happy to overlook this.

Moving documentary about a young man whose life, due to his illness and physical limitations, largely took place online in WoW, where he was still able to find the friendships, love and meaning he was looking for.

Very special to see how he managed to touch and help people irl, by making contact and offering a listening ear. And that these people wanted to share their story and experiences for this documentary is also special.

I wonder if more people could have been allowed to speak, but perhaps not everyone wanted to say this publicly or be filmed.

What I did miss a bit was a short explanation of the World of Warcraft world and the role of guilds. I 'know' WoW (although I have never played it seriously) but I can imagine that for non-gamers or older generations without a frame of reference it is a bit unclear what the game entails. Because of the 'spiced up' animations it sometimes seemed more like an animated film than a game.

Although I also understand that the creators wanted to focus on Mats' online interactions with his fellow players, and that could have happened in any MMORPG in principle.

4*

What a moving documentary. Days after the documentary, I'm still thinking about it. It's wonderful how you're completely immersed in his world. Yes, 5 stars for me.
