Slightly more accessible than director Jane Schoenbrun's previous obscure achievement, We're All Going To The World's Fair, but still an abstract and vague film with a transgender subtext. The alternately dreamy and uneasy atmosphere is effective at times and the camera work is attractive, but the plot and characters remain quite elusive. Anyway, if Schoenbrun continues to develop at this pace, we can probably count on a masterpiece in about ten films.

I thought director Jane Schoenbrun's debut was one of the worst films ever made, which is why I Saw the TV Glow could only be better than expected (you would think). It looks considerably better and more skilled and Justice Smith fits more or less perfectly in his idiosyncratic leading role. A lot of focus is placed on developing a unique and distinctive story, but the content is less interesting. The disadvantage is that Brigette Lundy-Paine's acting is worthless and that produces just about the most boring monologue (it also goes on uninterruptedly for about 10 minutes) ever. It really gets in the way of a quite interesting and mysterious story, but the visual surface also remains a bit too simple to create a more successful atmosphere. In my opinion, Schoenbrun seemed to be aiming for an absorbent effect, but there is little to be seen that could actively make this possible. Yet there is clear improvement in his career and I dare to look forward to the next project.

No, this movie is not for me. The acting was excellent from Smith, with beautiful atmospheric images, but I can't make sense of the story, and the images that I see flash in between every time. Perhaps that is also the point of the film, no longer knowing what is real and what is fake, but it is counterproductive for me. To be honest, I also expected a different kind of film, which made me quite surprised by what passes for horror in this film. A bit of a misplaced genre if you ask me. Quickly forgotten, which is not a problem I guess.
