"Witness the incredible true story."

Diana Nyad, 60, remains frustrated with the way she turned her back on her swimming career. After failing to complete the marathon 30 years earlier, she starts training again. Her goal is to be the first person to swim from Cuba to the United States without a shark cage. She receives support from her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll, who has her reservations. The navigator John Bartlett helps her cross the shark-infested areas.

Nice, albeit a bit too sentimental film that tells the true story of 60-year-old swimmer Diana Nyad (Annette Bening), who wants to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Bening is in great form as the arrogant, pleasantly crazy Nyad, and there are sympathetic supporting roles from Jodie Foster and Rhys Ifans. Documentary makers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi do well in their feature debut, although certain emotional scenes are emphasized a bit too much and the feel-good atmosphere of the whole event is overemphasized.

Old pliers in the water.

Because how nice it is that Bening and Foster are allowed to age so beautifully, to show their wrinkles - the wrinkles they have earned. With their still beautiful bodies, marked by a life about which countless stories can be told - just like the life of the protagonist, perhaps, although she looks slightly less movie star-like in the clips. Something about real life versus Hollywood perhaps.

Furthermore, I find the whole idea of this kind of long-distance swimming a bit difficult to understand, too artificial. Swimming with a shark cage, etc. But how different is it to have a boat next to you with a mental coach, a handy light that points the way, fresh water with some nutrients in it. Yes, it's a huge and impressive achievement, but there are so many of them already - what I'm looking for is the why, what it means, and in this film I don't find it. I would have more respect for Nyad if she had knitted woolen shirts for people in poor countries with the same dedication, as my demented grandmother did.

On the other side of the coin, there is the motivating idea that you are never too old to do something completely impossible. If you find the strength to turn off Netflix, there are no limits, that is the wise lesson this film gives us.

I have the feeling that I have seen these types of films many times before. An incredibly egocentric main character who wants to achieve an achievement and manages to push those around him away, after which the main character discovers that he cannot do it alone, reconciliation comes and the achievement is achieved. It's quite clichéd and then you need other elements to stand out, which there is room for, especially in audiovisual. However, this film does not take up that space, apart from a number of hallucination scenes that are depicted with poor CGI, which unfortunately causes the film to sink and drown. 1.5*, especially by a Foster, who is quite charming despite the age.
