Mediocre horror film that takes many ideas from other horror films, but never really becomes exciting. One of the reasons is the clown's dull mask and that as a viewer you quickly notice who the killer is. The cast is also not really convincing. Some kills are nice and brutal. Not bored, but already forgotten tomorrow. 5/10

A Spanish slasher with quite a bit of potential and self-knowledge. Director Alonso-Ojea seems to know what he is doing and has already selected many slasher elements to use and sometimes make fun of. However, because the film knows its own genre so well, it is a complete mystery to me why it reverts to basic elements in the second half. The revelation that shows how things finally work out is quite lame, especially because Alonso-Ojea unnecessarily rambles on with his story. A simple whodunnit would have been more than sufficient, but that twist of the second serial killer goes way over the line. In addition, I found the main character, who it ultimately revolves around, very boring, and that is especially noticeable because it group she hangs around is written in a very caricatured manner. I thought the final story was rather messy, but that does not alter the fact that it has a pleasant pace, the first half is very enjoyable and the murders can certainly be continued. In my opinion, slashers with interactive killers should be made much more often, but next time I would like to make them a lot less infantile.

A group of reading fanatics is threatened by a killer clown. Although the term coulrophobia is mentioned in the film and there is some chatter about clowns, it is actually completely irrelevant that the killer is wearing a clown mask. The theme hardly plays a role. If the killer had worn a different mask, only the word coulrophobia would have had to be removed from the script. That does not alter the fact that a killer with a clown mask does have a rather ominous appearance.

While watching I was reminded of the film I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) several times. There are clear similarities. Just like in that film, a group of friends is confronted with a witness to a shared secret and the group members must do everything they can to escape a bloodthirsty death. The film mainly revolves around the question of who is hidden behind the mask and why. The viewer is given some clues to answer that question. While he speculates, he is entertained by a number of brutal murders and gets to know the characters a little better.

Do not expect to much. The adaptation of Carlos Garcia Miranda's novel focuses mainly on entertainment. Socially critical aspects that the novel deals with more thoroughly (or so I read) are passed over in the film rather fleetingly and meaninglessly. Oh well, everything else works fine. Speculating is fun and watching a group in which paranoia sets in is anything but boring. The kills are also well staged and are sometimes even surrounded by a pleasant dose of tension. El Club de los Lectores Criminales is not a special film in any respect. I'll stick to terms like 'fairly funny' and 'fairly entertaining' and 'absolutely not original'.
