Very boring movie, like it's a cheap TV episode. And as if this were a film shot in Corona times, with only a handful of actors 1.5 meters away. Effectively, that Dracula is only in the picture for a few minutes. The rest is drivel and cliché horror. I'm surprised that this runs straight into the cinema and we have to wait ages for Sound of Freedom. Or other great movies. But other than that, on Netflix I'd even fast-forward through this dragon of a movie. None of the characters mattered. If you give it a try - hopefully you have a subscription because the full price for this movie isn't worth it.

Nice.

Something must have gone wrong with the marketing, because the film barely runs and the audience hardly comes to it. A shame, because the studios seem to have interfered with the production. Øvredal has enough qualities as a director and they are also discussed here, but you still have the feeling that he has not quite directed the product that he hoped to direct.

In any case, the film has more than decent acting. Hawkins and Franciosi are quite striking and Cunningham is excellently chosen for the role as captain in terms of appearance. The film does have a somewhat restless and incomplete structure, so that no character gets the space and time to flourish. Mutual relationships are not discussed and there is hardly any background. That's not a problem if it's a mindless horror movie, but The Last Voyage of the Demeter seemed to hope for more results than just serving as entertainment.

Visually very beautiful. Somewhat hasty editing, but great use of color and even better layout. I usually don't like horror films on old-fashioned boats, but Øvredal carries it out with passion. The film feels nice and mysterious and spooky. It is therefore not difficult to create atmospheric and exciting scenes, but it is such a shame that the antagonist is so dull. I understand that the film is a product of Nosferatu, but the figure that causes chaos here makes absolutely no impression.

I had a nice evening at the cinema. Entertaining, spooky, atmospheric and smooth. Those are the key words to describe The Last Voyage of the Demeter. However, it is unstructured and incomplete, which certainly gives it a messy impression in terms of content. It is therefore not a perfect film, but it still reaffirms Øvredal's qualities as a director. I'm looking forward to his next project, although I hope it will be put together less messy.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

This came out of the blue for a while. Hardly heard anything about it, but I really liked it.

A horror film on a ship always has something unique, because in principle you cannot just leave. You are in a small space with other sailors, but it is still big enough, because where is the beast hiding? And the film does that well. In the beginning one disappears and then another and then another and slowly but surely it becomes clear what is going on and what they have to deal with, just find him.

Visually, the film looked really great. The ship, the rough sea, the monster, the spooky atmosphere, it all looked very good. The score was also very good and the actors did a great job as far as I'm concerned. The pacing was also very good, because even though the movie lasted 2 hours, something always happened and the movie flew by.

The open ending gives the impression that there will be a part 2. Bring it on!!

One of the biggest surprises of this year so far. 3.5 stars.
