Letzter Abend plot

A young couple will soon move to Hanover. They are tired of lockdown and ready for something new and hopefully better than what corona (policy) has reduced their lives to. By way of farewell, they invite a few friends to a casual party in their now almost empty apartment. The problem is that some of them show up very late or not at all, while the house slowly fills up with unexpected visitors, including complete strangers.

The film shows the preparation and party that a young couple holds to say goodbye to their friends in Hannover because they are moving to Berlin and is therefore a somewhat busy chaos. Things don't go as expected, of which the failure of the meal and the change in the guest listare the least drastic. The film manages to keep it interesting, but the way in which the newcomers immediately feel at home and they swing from intense love for each other (even for people they don't know) to intense arguments and back again is also something unbelievable and sometimes irritating. However, the intense emotions will have to be seen as a kind of catharsis in which uncomfortable truths come to light, because after the party the lives of the people are no longer the same. The film is thus a Generation Z variant on a well-known theme and in that sense quite interesting, but also has a few weaknesses.

On the evening before they move to Berlin, depressive Clemens [Sebastian Jakob Doppelbaur] and his girlfriend Lisa [Pauline Werner] invite some people to a farewell party. Clemens is busy writing a serenade for Lisa, but she wants him to clear out the bookcase. Arguments about who will get flour for dessert are resolved when upstairs neighbor Katharina [Susanne Dorothea Schneider] appears willing to borrow some flour. Outside, Clemens is accosted by Valerie [Isabelle von Stauffenberg], a somewhat hectic student who is looking for an apartment nearby and asks if she can charge her phone. Some friends cancel at the end, so both Katharina and Valerie may be able to celebrate the farewell party. What was intended as a pleasant get-together turns into a number of painful confrontations that place mutual relationships in a different light. Not very original, but despite a somewhat rough start, well developed with a good mix of drama, euphoria, anger and humor.

I have the feeling that I have already seen similar films, also European in production, but I can't really name a title. An unusual film in which structure and a pre-planned activity degenerate into coincidences and unexpected situations.

The plot is simple. A couple from Hanover calls it quits and moves to Berlin. On the last evening they invite a number of friends to celebrate their farewell. Judging by the space, they still have a lot of work to do the next day and for me personally such timing is not realistic, but it is a nice starting point for having dinner with a group of friends. No bizarre games that got out of hand like with the smartphone on the table (Perfetti Sconosciuti (Film, 2016) or Le Jeu (Film, 2018)).

A film with unknown strange guests or friends who show up but don't necessarily match everyone. It produces nice casual pseudo-intellectual conversations. Entertaining and calmly progressing to a catharsis at the end. Not a bad film, but certainly not memorable either.
