"A Very Funny Picture by Federico Fellini"
Wanda and Ivan are just married and on their honeymoon in Rome. Ivan wants to visit family, the Pope and the famous sights and has planned the stay down to the minute. However, Wanda has other intentions. She dreams of seeing the hero of a popular photo novel, the White Sheik.

As a solo debut, La Sceicco Bianco is not bad in itself, but I cannot call it impressive, even with the greatest difficulty. The plot is extremely thin and the acting performances are mostly very bland or simply weak. In fact, Masina's cameo as Cabiria easily stands out. I found Trieste particularly irritating, and Bovo is more handsome than good. Neither actor is entirely capable of bringing out the subtle dramatic edge that Fellini clearly intended to include.
It is nice to see how typical Fellini touches are already visible here. The introduction of the title character, for example, is beautiful, as is that fire-breather who comes to liven things up for no reason. Additionally, I found the scene at the police station particularly funny. It is a shame that the whole film wasn't along those lines.

It is tempting, due to themes such as dream/illusion versus reality, the innocent child-woman, and the presence of Giulietta Masina as Cabiria, to view this as nothing more than a prelude to Fellini's later and greater films; however, judged on its own merits, this is not only a friendly and alternately funny and slightly poignant tragicomedy, but also simply a fascinating and reasonably strong film that deserves more attention than it receives here on MovieMeter (my predecessor wrote his post almost six years ago!).

Fellini with his second film (first solo) in a comedy of errors that deals primarily with bourgeois morality and honor, and very often foreshadows his later work. The small role of his future wife is truly beautiful (she simply plays Cabiria) and her scene is the most beautiful in the film. More of a premature Fellini than other early films like I Vittelloni or Il Bidone.
