This family dynamic eventually leads to tensions that seep into Sammy's audiovisual creations.

A largely autobiographical film by director Steven Spielberg, about his youth, his budding love for cinema and the complex relationship with (and between) his parents. The nostalgic, sometimes rather naive longing for the past sometimes clashes with the more serious undertones of the plot, resulting in an unbalanced, but always entertaining film. The acting is a bit too thick for my taste and self-aggrandizement is constantly lurking, that's for sure. Fortunately, the magical final scene, with a great cameo from a certain director, and the brilliant final shot make up for it.

Spielberg.

His most personal film is the slogan that you read most often with this film. And it's obviously very autobiographical. Anyone who has seen the documentary Spielberg will see a lot in this film. It's just a pity that I don't find Spielberg's strength in the drama but more in the sensitive blockbuster. Here the true Spielberg chafes with the fact that he wants to tell a personal story. It's all pretty glossy drama. The father/mother/boyfriend have quite a complex relationship with each other. But really that break in the image, or something rawer drama is something Spielberg doesn't want. (or could be) In my view, it needed that to escape a rippling film that, had it been made by a filmmaker other than Spielberg, would not have even noticed.

The ending is great though. That's where the movie should have started...

2 stars.

The cast plays well and the film looks neat, but the story is unfortunately not that interesting, it was a long sit but the film never really captivated. Therefore not sufficient.
