The subculture of the underground comic is populated by failed artists. They are touchy male beings who hold themselves in very high regard and are constantly seeking validation and recognition of a creative talent that usually exists only in the mind of the yearning artist. It is an environment populated by self-satisfied and egocentric male nerds and freaks. In this subculture, women exist only as drawings on paper. Incidentally, women do not play a shining role in this film at all. You only see them in annoying supporting roles. As a nagging mother or as a hideous employer.
The subculture is a refuge for pimply young men with unstyled hairstyles, excessive sweating, and being overweight. The casting director did his best to raise the nerd factor to an extremely high level. An admirable achievement. The only one without any discernible physical obscenity is the protagonist, Robert. But then again, he is an arrogant, spoiled brat with no capacity for empathy. In short, a terribly annoying character.
The film follows the paths of Robert, who is convinced of his drawing talent and wants to succeed as a comic artist. They are terribly tedious paths. His experiences are absurd and meaningless, primarily demonstrating the creator's failed humorous intentions and incredibly soul-numbing. At no point was I intrigued by a scene, a character, or any part of the story.
In reviews I picked up here and there, the good ratings for the film stand out. Perhaps you have to be a fan of underground comics and the associated atmosphere to appreciate a film like this. I found Funny Pages to be a dreadful film.

Funny Pages is what you get when you translate a story about someone wanting to become an underground comic artist into an underground comic and then adapt it into a real-life film. It is original and quite fresh, but it didn't quite work for me. Exaggerated characters and gloomy atmospheres, but filmed quite dryly, as if it were a quirky comedy, which it clearly isn't.
