Looking for doors, Suzume follows him to the ruins of a dilapidated building in the mountains. There they find a freestanding, undamaged door. Attracted by an unseen force, Suzume reaches for the door and is dragged inside. All over Japan, other doors are opening, triggering a series of disasters. To stop them, Suzume will have to make a grand journey and close the doors one by one.

After the masterful Your Name and the very good Weathering with You, this is the third Shinkai film I've seen in the cinema. In a packed Pathé room at 1.40 pm I once again enjoyed the enormous creativity that Shinkai manages to put into the plot. It is nice to go into it without any prior knowledge, because the plot knows how to intrigue and with a good dose of humor the film also grabs you from minute 1. Suzume's adventure is beautifully captured and the contemporary Japanese world also looks beautiful.
Shinkai's films never get too flat, despite the fact that this is of course easily lurking. Especially when Souta turns into a chair. So the balance is there.
Like his previous films, the film works towards a climax and the drama takes over. That works well in the film, but what hinders the film a bit is that after the big setpiece in Tokyo, the film continues for another 45 minutes. So it's a bit of a long sit for an animation and I don't follow the movie 100% in Suzume's drive to save Souta, because she actually fell in love with a chair
But it doesn't really go off the rails anywhere and keeps you interested until the very end.
I have to say that I don't think the worm at the end looks great visually. The 3D animation does not blend well with the rest of the world. That could have been better.

All in all a nice seat. Suzume is original, funny and has a heart. But the level of Your Name and to a lesser extent Weathering with You is not reached.

March 11. Unlike 9/11, this doesn't ring a bell with the Dutchman (I suspect) but that's the day of the tsunami (and the disaster in Fukushima). And this movie is about that, and about earthquakes in general. It takes a while, but that date falls somewhere halfway (of which I wonder how many people immediately make the link) and is the background really clear (you also know that the film must play somewhere in 2024 as a 17- year-old when he was 4). Japan does have some traumas and for one there is Godzilla and for the other now this film.

Shinkai once made two very fine films, the triptych 5 Centimeters per Second and Garden of Words. Then with Kimi no Na Wa finally a bigger success, also with a bigger film but still with small nice moments. Weathering with You was already getting bigger (and a little less) and this Suzume continues that tone a bit. This film does have some nice little moments and occasionally beautiful drawings full of detail (especially city panoramas) but much more is chosen for the plot and action than for the characters. That causes a lot of rush in the first hour where there is hardly time for the beautiful images (literally, many shots are short) and in the second hour it all gets a bit melodramatic and I don't really understand Suzume's actions and psyche either. Certainly the last half hour is significantly less.

Nevertheless, there are enough beautiful moments in it for a pass and the highlight is the part before the planned (to use a term) earthquake in Tokyo. Wonderful to see those people and that city in the everyday with that music and the impending doom that no one is aware of. Really great job. The first hour is also absolutely entertaining, but the film clearly sinks in after Tokyo . 3.0*.

Makoto Shinkai sure knows how to make a movie. This is the 6th film I've seen from him and again I like to give a high score. It's not Your Name, but Suzume still impresses. A film with wonderful animation, a fascinating story and fascinating characters. The film seeks a path between adventure, mythology and romance. With symbolism that is clearly present and at the same time not too obvious. I'm glad I got to see this in the cinema. Shinkai is allowed to make more films from me, apparently far from finished.
