Downfall: The Case against Boeing plot

This documentary reveals the Boeing company's negligence and greed that led to two plane crashes within five months. Aviation experts, journalists, former Boeing employees and victims' families are exposing a culture of reckless cost-cutting and cover-ups at the once-esteemed company. The documentary serves as a fierce indictment of Wall Street's corrupting influence, exposing bigger questions about the dangers of the American business ethic and the staggering human costs.

Fascinating subject, and probably every effort was made to make this a decent documentary, but I felt like I was looking at documents and blueprints half the time. Perhaps unavoidable, but it could all have been told in 60 minutes, or at least visually enhanced.

Required viewing.

Particularly shocking is the moment when it subtly emerges that the CEO has decided to move on to a "position elsewhere," but receives an exceptionally generous golden handshake. And of course, it's painfully clear that absolutely nothing, absolutely nothing, is being learned from the entire troubling history. Yes, a new law has been passed that gives more powers to the supervisory bodies—but that wasn't really the problem.

Nor do I think the finger pointing at Wall Street is justified. Good heavens, they were under pressure to make a profit, you never had that back then. No, I think it's much broader—and not just Boeing, but society as a whole. I've seen the exact same trend in my work. And not just there—words like "obscene self-enrichment" were already in the newspapers years ago. As is subtly mentioned, every company has some woolly slogan like "we are committed to excellence," you name it. There's even a website that generates such a slogan for you from random words, which also shows its true value.

Another thing that comes up is the nostalgic story of the time when Boeing had company uniforms. Perhaps that's part of its essence—identity. I don't see that at almost any company anymore.

From its inception, the aircraft manufacturer prioritized crew and passenger safety. For a long time, it enjoyed a spotless reputation, and employees were proud to work there. Two fatal accidents within five months involving the newly introduced Boeing Max 737 marked a turning point. This documentary meticulously reconstructs what went wrong, the ways Boeing tried to deflect responsibility, and the changes in corporate culture that led to this tragic, criminal scandal. It's well-made and easy to follow, even for relatively technical novices, but its presentation is rather unremarkable.
