The only two expectations I had beforehand were that it wouldn't be a typical 'jumpscare' horror movie and that it would stay true to the 1970s as much as possible.

Both came out completely. First of all, it's impressive how the 70's style is reflected in all kinds of aspects: from sound to lighting, editing, font, music, acting, film grain and much more. The style has been thought through very well, which is also evident from the audio and mixing of certain scenes. And that could all turn out very wrong, but it certainly does not. Impressive to watch, listen to and experience.

But then the story remains. Horror can be interpreted very loosely, I found it much more of a mystery than horror. The story is, especially in the beginning, very slow and once it gets going, it is mainly puzzling how everything works. It deliberately remains somewhat vague and can certainly be interpreted in several ways. Only unlike real brainteasers, you're never going to get all the way out of this one. It is one of those films where the question quickly arises whether the writer (also director) really had answers to this, even if there were several answers. The trance in the beginning was mostly soothing and very 'uneventful'. With fifteen minutes less in the first part, I was perhaps a bit more impressed by the ending. The conclusion is interesting and catchier than the first 45 minutes, fortunately. By then alone it had to brush off the monotonous flavor of the first half.

Feed for the mumblecore enthusiasts who found The Lighthouse (Film, 2019) - MovieMeter.nl too obvious and prefer it more abstract. Which probably means, only a handful of people this movie actually resonates with.

Experimental film by director Mark Jenkin, who paid tribute to the 70s with this. A project with such a stylization stands out among modern horror films, but that can have both a negative and a positive effect. In the case of Enys Men, it is unfortunately the former, especially because there is not much going on here and Jenkin does not succeed in effectively increasing the pressure and/or the atmosphere. The characters are also given little and the dreamy images in between do not want to become very uncomfortable, but the mysterious feeling hangs strong and that results in unpredictability. Enys Men therefore never becomes really boring, but as the last half hour progresses, the running time does start to weigh a bit.
