A somewhat disjointed documentary that has to make do with the footage available and the people available. Cynthia Lennon and Yoko Ono are particularly featured, with analysis by TV and radio producer Paul Gambaccini and Professor Camille Paglia, who specializes in art and popular culture. A few testimonials are provided via archive footage from other important people in Lennon's life. Nothing about his youth, his solo career, or his relationship with the other Beatles. The title is somewhat telling, as it paints a picture of Lennon from the Beatles' artist to the peace activist, which were ultimately two different worlds.

I've never been a fan of Lennon, but I was a fan of The Beatles. If it's more about his activism than about him as a person or an artist, that's less interesting to me.

Ringo was the joker, George the quiet one, Paul the sweetest, and John Lennon the mischievous (and most controversial) Beatle. With help from Yoko Ono, John's ex-wife Cynthia, and the then-famous British radio DJ Paul Gambaccini, Byron reflects on the final years of The Beatles and Lennon's personal and artistic development. The film also explores the influence of Yoko Ono and the death of impresario Brian Epstein (in 1967). Personal conversations, including those with son Julian in archive footage, and many familiar and lesser-known archive images complete this excellent portrait.
