"You can't bury the past."

Widower Henry lives on a farm with his son Wyatt and offers hesitant shelter to the injured Curry. This man has a large sum of money in his pocket that some men are looking for. They also visit the farm and pose as government employees. Henry doesn't know who to believe yet, but to protect his son and hometown, he can handle a gun remarkably well.

A straightforward, solid western that manages to create a wonderful atmosphere with modest means and strong acting. Wonderfully sober. Wonderfully menacing. Wonderfully uncomfortable. Wonderfully cold. And wonderfully exciting.

Simple means. A plain overgrown with tall grass that sways in the wind. The sky is grey. Misty fields. A bunch of grim-looking horsemen. A shabby place to live. Of those things. Simple means that give the film a nice uncomfortable atmosphere. At the center of that evoked capacity is Tim Blake Nelson as a wretched farmer by the name of Old Henry who lives a hard and simple life with his son. A head smaller and significantly more emaciated than the other characters, Tim Blake Nelson dominates the film.

The story is not very startling. Think Rio Bravo. A small group of people indoors against a force majeure outdoors. Exciting. There are also some questions about the identities of certain characters, including that of Old Henry, who emerges as a man who wields a revolver very skillfully. Nice. And then there's the fierce and bloody finale with a shootout that's worth it.

Nice western.

One of the better westerns of recent times. I especially had to think of those westerns as they were made in the past. Especially with that shoot-out at the end. Good acting by that Henry and that twist at the end was of course also there. In short: Old Henry has been great entertainment for me at this time when the cinemas are closed... but as it looks now, that will change in the coming week.

A very fine western indeed. Straightforward with a clear story and a good pace where everything is handled in 90 minutes. Tim Blake Nelson is doing great here, but not just here, because this actor with his very characteristic haggard head is doing more than fine. Reminds me a bit of Sam Rockwell actually.

I can only endorse the positive reactions here. From an underdog role, it's always nice to give the bad guys a go. The film is small, the locations are limited and mainly revolves around the farm, and the cast is not large either. But sometimes a film doesn't need more to hit the mark.
