In 1995, Patrizia Reggiani devises a plan to get rid of her former husband. He is the Italian businessman Maurizio Gucci and heads the fashion house of the same name. He is also the grandson of the famous fashion designer Guccio. Reggiani lets a hit man do the dirty work. She would later be arrested by the police and ended up in jail.

You don't think it's possible, but Ridley Scott has managed to film a wonderfully smooth tabloid story with Borgia allures as a bone-dry docudrama. The demise of the Gucci empire has been portrayed with palpable reluctance, as if Scott wanted to get rid of it as quickly as possible. The decadence, the flair, the hubris, the marble neo-classical operetta kitsch, it is filmed as unimaginatively as if it were by the first bookkeeper. I also understand that an American production cannot just recruit Italian actors, but because of this the film takes place in a cultural vacuum, a metisized no man's land. The characters certainly don't look like Italians, they come across as Italian-Americans, but more boring and less noisy. Vaguely sophisticated, like a California wine bar. If you're kidding with reality, wouldn't you just as well have located the Gucci empire in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn? At least we could have a little laugh. Even though they each appear to be in a different movie, the actors do a decent job. The exception is Jared Leto, whose performance is the most derailed ego trip since Brad Pitt in Snatch.

I do like Adam Driver and Lady Gaga was a very positive surprise in A Star is Born. So I had high hopes for this movie.
Both main characters live up to it and play very well. Their characters also show excellent character development.
Unfortunately, it gets completely snowed under by the Italian accents. It's a gimmick that in films is often limited to supporting roles, but to really hear every character for over 2.5 hours with such a lilting fake accent made sure that I wasn't really sucked into the otherwise well-designed 80s atmosphere. The only one who can get away with it is Al Pacino (nice to see him again).
The low point was Paolo, played by Jared Leto, who rightly got a Razzy for this role. Because that made no sense at all. His misunderstood, pathetic, nagging and overacting character was still too bad for Wire Steel or Koefnoen. It seemed like that character was meant for a completely different movie.
All in all, not very bad, thanks to excellently performed lead roles, but it could have been much better.
