Theater actor and director Yûsuke Kafuku is happily married to dramaturge Oto until the latter dies of a brain haemorrhage. Two years later, Kafuku is about to direct a play at a theater festival in Hiroshima. For this occasion he is assigned the young female driver Misaki who mainly keeps quiet.

The film is a character film that is not visually convincing at first sight, but actually has wonderful images. The story about an actor/director with a piece in which he reflects himself. Theater and real emotions are increasingly intertwined. It is a very layered film, which is put together quite well. It's a bit slower cinema, but before you know it you're completely carried away. The director manages to say a lot between the lines in a film that revolves around dialogue and theater texts.

I'll add half. As several people here say, the film stays with you afterwards.
I read the review somewhere online: 'as if you walk through the drizzle and come home and it turns out that you are soaking wet'.
Perfect representation of what this film does in all its layers.
Is full of beautiful scenes, but the best one was probably when Kafuku and his driver eat with the Korean couple and the man translates the story of his deaf and dumb wife. You can see those eyes of the two go so beautifully from the translator to the original narrator and back again. So subtle and human

Very nice indeed, most of it has already been said here. The beginning of Drive my car is still a bit lackluster and at the end it just goes off track at one point (when they are giving speeches at that mother's house[/ spoiler]), but otherwise very nice. The tunnel scenes and Tarkovsky, sure, goosebumps. The sign language, also beautiful. Drive my car finds the right balance between what goes on between the lines and what comes out in the lines themselves. Another striking moment: how the main character and the driver walk down the stairs of that waste processing company, so unemphatic yet so precise, really well done. And nice soundtrack/score too.
