Teenager Sam [George Ferrier] has not yet come to terms with his mother's death, and that is at the expense of his relationship with his father Robert [Maron Csokas] and his behavior at school. After Sam is expelled from school for misconduct, Robert sends him to the mansion of his own mother Ruth [Charlotte Rampling], a demanding, bitter woman who is paid to care for Sam after a fall leaves her temporarily confined to a wheelchair. You can guess how it ends for both Samen Ruth, but Rampling lends a depth and a dignity to her character that transcends the hackneyed screenplay and she alone makes this worth a look.

Great cast, especially Rampling, but the film itself is quite boring. Despite the friction between the characters, I didn't think it was a very interesting story. I also thought the inevitable ending was a bit weak. Not enough.

Still a bit of a disappointment, I expected a bit more from this. Even acting great Charlotte Rampling wasn't at her best here. The story is often predictable, and occasionally just illogical and strange. Forcing sentiment on sentiment doesn't work that way for me. It all looks nice (duh, New Zealand), but it's not enough to convince me.
