Nice to see all the characters pass by in their younger years and that it is now clear what kind of gel Sivio stuffs in his hair, but otherwise this is of course a completely unnecessary film. I understand the sentiment of casting Michael Gandolfini as the young Tony, but that doesn't work out too great either. Pretty fun to see once, but if I had been the creator of the Sopranos I would never have made it in my hasses to make this and left the series nicely alone. As it should.

Family Constellations

The Many Saints of Newark provides insight into the life of a young Tony Soprano and his bed, allowing you to take a look at his past through systemic glasses. The focus here is, incidentally, on Dickie Moltisanti, who sees Tony as a kind of father figure and whom he looks up to enormously. I feel that some would find it disappointing that the focus is on him instead of Tony, but I had no problem with this myself as I find him a very engaging character.

I also find the atmosphere comparable to the series, although the characters here remain much more on the surface, so that the level of the series is never reached. This is also more difficult to avoid with a feature film, within a universe from which a complete prequel series could easily have been extracted. However, this is done often enough these days, so I also found it refreshing to see a compact story and learn more about Tony's childhood at the same time.

Just don't expect a deep dive into Tony's own childhood. Rather, he plays a supporting role in his own story. Because of this I understand that fans can be disappointed that they don't get to see more of the rising mafia boss himself. Here the character gets too little screen time and the focus is rather on references related to characters who had an important role in the series. This was basically done nicely, but no more than a nice bonus. In addition, it sometimes distracted me, because some actors tried too hard to imitate the characters. Criticism aside, it's better to see this film as a standalone story by Dickie Moltisanti who happens to have a connection to the Sopranos universe, rather than adding much to the character of Tony Soprano himself.

3.5*

It's as if HBO gave a large sum of money to a group of high school students with the "make a Sopranos prequel movie" memo.

Subsequently, those students spent all the money on the cast, set design and a cameraman, and took care of the directing, script, editing and sound design themselves.

It's really incomprehensible how such a poor imitation of a great series has been approved for release.
