What a great conflicting movie. Story-wise it's not much, but visually it looks great at times. Beautiful decors, colors and designs and sometimes the ugliest people. Sutherland isn't the prettiest one here, but what sometimes ugly people pass by here, sometimes you don't think possible.

In terms of content I didn't think it was that much, but it's definitely amusing. The opening scene is great and the various sex scenes are also very entertaining. I just had to laugh at Sutherland's head, which he keeps pulling. His adventures as Casanova are certainly fascinating at times. Yet there are also voids in between and sometimes it doesn't always feel like a whole.

All in all, it sure is entertaining. It is clearly not 100% drama, because there is also clearly comedy intertwined. In terms of settings and costumes it is great, in other areas it is clearly less. I've certainly seen better Fellinis, but despite that and the length of this film, I still enjoyed myself quite a bit.

Perhaps more a collection of tableaux than a compelling dramatic line, but since I first saw this film, those scenes have been etched on my "mind's eye" in such a way that I will never lose them: the sex under the watchful eye of the voyeuristic ambassador, the anemic seamstress ("What should we do? Bloodletting!"), Casanova who needs help with the act ("Shake 'em!"), the fuck contest, the orgy in room-on-wheels in Dresden, and the mechanical wooden doll – all magnificent scenes and images, alternately (and sometimes at the same time) extremely funny and very sad. And the only reason why I don't think this is Fellini's best is because he has made a number of other even better films.
