It is a bit of a shame that the documentary is very short. Because it was certainly interesting to learn more about sumo wrestling, which has deep cultural and religious traditions dating back to ancient Japan. But where traditions are relied upon, there are often gender inequalities. Women are still not allowed in the ring at a professional level. I also recently read an article about a man who became unwell in the ring and was rushed to his aid by a nurse who entered the ring. Sacrilege, as it turned out, since women are considered unclean...

Despite the great respect I have for traditions, it is still somewhat outdated and superseded. But the atmosphere and the idea surrounding sumo wrestling as a whole is very fascinating. There are plenty of samurai films, but I would like to see a beautiful, serene Japanese film about sumo sometime, something in the genre of The Wrestler (Film, 2008) by Aronofsky.

I agree with Fisico: interesting subject and beautifully shot, but at 19 minutes, 'Little Miss Sumo' (2018) takes too little time to delve into the depths. You get glimpses of Hiyori Kon the person, her youth as a young wrestler, and the views she shares on gender inequality in sumo wrestling. Then, 'Little Miss Sumo' (2018) builds up to an important match, where Hiyori faces an international wrestler. Can she hold her own against these bigger and taller opponents!? What does it say that this typically Japanese sport for women is now mainly carried by Russian and Ukrainian athletes? But then it is suddenly over, and you are already watching the credits.
