Neil Marshall... with all his experience and a modest list of (now surely) classics behind his name, you can expect a little more. Set during the British plague epidemic, it is a combination of period piece and horror that certainly doesn't sound crazy on paper. The streets littered with piles of corpses, crawling with rats and those masks; it almost writes itself. But thanks to budgetary constraints and the miscast of Charlotte Kirk, it rarely comes to fruition. It is especially very uneventful and unbalanced, for example certain things that I normally appreciate ( that crushing of the head ) just fall out of the blue. As if Marshall is constantly limping in two minds. Then towards the end I think he is way too reserved again, so patience is hardly rewarded. Nevertheless, some settings were atmospheric and there are too few really good Period-Piece horror films, so for those who really need it, it is worth a try.

Let's just say right away given the few positive reviews and the very few votes so far that I really enjoyed this film. And I mean on all levels. To begin with, the horror is mainly present in the viewer's imagination. Indeed, you don't see that much torture, but some trials can count without being portrayed effectively and ruthlessly. Yet there are enough gore moments, especially the scene with the cart and the head was nasty and on the one hand also surprising. I didn't see that scene coming in this movie. But also not to be forgotten is the presence of the demonic creature that looked good anyway. The story is fun and engaging to follow. In addition, the locations, decors and furnishings create a dark atmosphere. Especially the plague masks know how to bring a nasty atmosphere. Charlotte Kirk as Grace ( the director's girlfriend ) plays her role well and her rear is also in the picture several times. Incidentally, a very beautiful scene when she is naked embraced by the demonic creature. Sean Pertwee as John Moorcroft is clearly the most interesting character and plays that role well. Neil Marshall rings a bell, but had to look it up and apparently this director suits me because The Descent (2005 ), Doomsday (2008) and Centurion (2010) also score well. Dog Soldiers (2002) and Hellboy (2019) a little less.

Mediocre horror movie. The story is weak and the execution is also mediocre. The structure is reasonable, but otherwise it is not a fascinating film. Horror fans will also be disappointed. It doesn't get really intense. The biggest problem is the whole decoration. It's all a bit wooden and amateurish. For example, our protagonist, no matter how often she is tortured, always looks well styled and she always continues to hop around as if nothing had happened. Her acting performances are also not very high level. 1.5/.20
