A beautiful film about poverty, loneliness and parent-child relationships. Above all, the film looks pleasantly crazy - I also experienced the film as a comedy - but the plot also appears to be well put together. Of course, as a viewer of a film about a family of swindlers, you are also misled, but in this case you don't have a bad feeling about it.

26-year-old Old Dolio [Evan Rachel Wood] lives with her parents Robert [Richard Jenkins] and Theresa [Debra Winger] in a condemned commercial building. Together they try to pay rent arrears in their usual way: through fraud and scams. When a few regular tricks no longer yield results, Old Dolio comes up with a plan to pay the amount owed in one fell swoop. To do this, they must use a 'won' flight to New York. During that plane trip, Robert and Therese decide to involve a fourth person in the scam without consulting Old Dolio. And that appears to have far-reaching consequences for everyone involved.

The first half hour is full of inventive, often hilarious moments - note, among other things, the way in which the three try to avoid their landlord - and Jenkins in particular delivers excellent acting. However, there is hardly any character development, which makes it difficult to understand, let alone sympathize with, the scams of this family. Fortunately, the screenplay regularly manages to pleasantly surprise you even in the weak second half.

Well.

As I often say, you have to try something new every now and then to get out of the rut, out of mediocrity. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't.

So this is one of those films where that just doesn't work. And not just a little bit, but just not at all. Just about every idea that the makers have tried in this misfire turns out not to work, and not just a little bit, but just absolutely not.

It is surprising that it does not work if you adapt Evan Rachel Wood into a caricature of her normal, extraterrestrially beautiful hair and head. Who could have expected that? It is also surprising when you make a film about outcasts, but then choose to have a bunch of lowlifes appear as your main characters, so far beyond the label of 'deplorable', that no one can have any sympathy for your protagonists anymore.

A fine example of a completely failed game with caricatures. Or at least, that's what I assume. Oscars for the worst plot ever, and for the most confusing narrative. Honorable mention for sad direction, unnecessary name dropping in the title roles. But especially the Oscar for releasing this completely failed work against all reason. You just have to dare - and while I would normally respect that, this misfire is so absurd that it also approaches absolute zero.

Let me summarize briefly: without a doubt the absurdly worst film that the unblessed year 2020 has produced. Skip this one, it will enrich your life.
