Chun Jiang Shui Nuan plot
Over a period of two years, the coming and going of the seasons along a river in Fuyang will be captured on film. For example, the Yu family, consisting of an older woman and her four sons, is followed for a year. The family members are looking for wealth and social status and follow their hearts in doing so. First part of a triptych.

The Fuchun River flows through Zhejian province in southeastern China and plays a central role in this unexciting family drama. Xiaogang Gu regularly films from a quietly bobbing boat on the river, keeping us both literally and figuratively far removed from the characters and what pass for 'action'. For example, there is a scene in which one of the protagonist swims quite a distance in the river at high speed and has an everyday (read: uninteresting) conversation with a friend. Meanwhile, we see one after the other swimming at breakneck speed, as if all Chinese swimmers are top athletes. Like the water of the river, it left me cold. The screenplay is a series of poorly developed anecdotes about a 70-year-old mother [Hongjun Du] and the question of how the children will take care of her. Lasts more than 2½ hours and ends with the unwelcome announcement that this is only the first part.

The long shots and the abundant attention to the region give the film an occasional documentary touch throughout its length.
But of course there is the chronicle of a family in the daily hassle with the classic themes, full of inevitable human traits, not always the nicest.
No shocking events and climaxes, but taking your time (the swimming session for example) to serve it calmly.
Couldn't always convince me but saying that there is no charm from it wouldn't be correct either.
The family photo in the end adds a sympathetic note.
