Great atmospheric.

I'm not Wright's biggest fan, he will always be a bit hit-and-miss, but here he shows when he's fully committed to the atmosphere, he can be a great director. Where I found Baby Driver particularly irritating with its 80s rave, I could quite enjoy this ode to the 60s. And the 60s do me a lot less.

This is mainly because it is not so much a throwback to the 60s, but rather inspiration where Wright throws over a more modern filter. A very attractive film both visually and in terms of soundtrack, which makes it all the easier to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere. Acting is also definitely there, even thought that McKenzie easily stood her ground next to Taylor-Joy.

It may not be a real full-blooded, pure horror, for that the film focuses just a bit too much on the atmosphere itself, rather than on tension, blood and gore. So anyone looking for a quick date movie will be disappointed, but that's by no means critical. More of this Wright, totally worth it.

4.0* and a extended review

Audiovisually strong film that makes the 60s atmosphere splash off the screen. Eloise also loves the 60s and is less comfortable when peers are dancing to contemporary beats. Give her Dusty Springfield. To make it as a fashion designer, she moves to London where, after a short stopover, she moves into a student house with a single lady in a musty house.

She dreams of the sixties that revive in her dreams and fantasies. And how! That first passage through the alley to the bustling London of yesteryear was fantastic. Very atmospheric and stimulating scene.

And while Thomasin McKenzie has something to do with her innocent look and new look, it's the amazing Anya Taylor-Joy who draws all the attention to her. Nice mirror scenes between the two characters. Glamor and glitter splash off the screen and all that beauty also has its downside. It takes the film to a darker, grayer side. Not a horror, rather a film with thriller elements. And also a reference to the Me-too movement.

Strong build up with a tight pace from Wright. Something we already saw in, for example, Baby driver. Towards the end the traditional plot twist that was something to come. Still enjoyed it very much and one of the better movies of 2021.

In the meantime I have seen some interesting Wright films. Previously Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Baby Driver and now this one. The blurring of reality and dream/vision always offers great possibilities in films, and those possibilities are strongly realized in this film. Visually first, the film is quite impressive with all the neon lights, but the plot is definitely there too. Also a lot of strong actors. Taylor-Joy seems made for retro clothing, as she showed earlier in The Queen's Gambit; Matt Smith is a charming playboy with a very strong character as before in The Crown and Rigg's casting is strong for symbolic reasons alone; I've never seen The Avengers, but I've seen pictures from that period, I've seen the James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service and am aware that they was a style icon in the 1960s. It turns out to have been her last role, but a very strong one.

Of course not everything is perfect, especially the zombie-like men don't quite work for me, but in general it is wonderful to see such a cool stylized film, which also manages to keep the tension in it in terms of plot. to keep. 4*.
