The Knight before Christmas plot

"A modern day romance with a medieval twist"

After a sorceress brings medieval knight Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse) to modern-day Ohio for Christmas, he befriends Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens), a smart and kind chemistry teacher who has long lost faith in love. Brooke introduces Sir Cole to the modern world and helps him in his mysterious quest - the only way to bring him back home. But as he and Brooke grow closer, Sir Cole begins to question how much he really wants to go back to his old life.

That boy's acting is so lousy that it is not believable for a moment and there is not a spark of chemistry between him and a nicely playing Hudgens. This makes the film one long sit-down. What I still like is that there is hardly any conflict, as you often see in rom-coms, about 2/3 of the film. But otherwise this is a boring and dead animal that brings a little Christmas spirit, but nothing more. 1.5*.

The makers must have thought that deep down, every woman longs for the chivalrous gallantries of the days when marriages were still forced bonds and groups of women were burned at the stake if they dared to speak out. Although this film is just as naive about the present as it is about the distant past. How school teacher Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens) tries to forget her rotten ex by bringing in a complete stranger. Brooke must trust that Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse) can be believed based on his boyish good looks. Even though he comes up with the completely insane story that he is actually an English knight from the 14th century, on a knight's mission prompted by a Christmas witch. Even the authorities seem benevolent during the Christmas holidays: the immigration service does not throw this passportless foreigner into custody and he does not disappear into the depths of a psychiatric institution. But you know what I actually hate the most about this cheesy Christmas movie? As disconnected from any reality as this formulaic film actually is, I was so invested in the sparkling and cheerful presence of Vanessa Hudgens. 'The Knight before Christmas' (2019) feels like her film from start to finish and she is so endearing that I was sucked into this Christmas nonsense.

“It's just you look... positively radiant.”

“Why, thank you. And you, my knight in shining cashmere wool blend...”

Vanessa Hudgens is a fun and charismatic actress, but why she keeps choosing these kinds of predictable Christmas films is a mystery to me. The biggest problem with The Knight Before Christmas is that Hudgens' co-star (Josh Whitehouse) is very mediocre and lacks charisma and talent. It is thanks to Hudgens that there is still some chemistry between the two.
