1870s. In colonial Australia, the British rule with an iron fist to keep the Irish in check. Ned Kelly (George MacKay) discovers that his family is made up of Irish rebels. He is apprenticed to notorious highwayman Harry Power (Russell Crowe). After the wrongful arrest of his mother, he brings together a few rebels to take on the British.

Messy, only sporadically interesting film about the legendary folk hero/public enemy Ned Kelly, who took on the British occupiers in Australia in 1870. The first hour, about Kelly's early years, is worth it, partly due to lively supporting roles from Russell Crowe and Charlie Hunnam, but after that things get really bad. Important characters come and go, the plot starts to wander and the tone of the film becomes increasingly unbalanced. Towards the end there is no saving it. Nice camera work, that is.

Kurzel to his roots.
Started making raw films in an Australian background before moving to America to make films with large amounts of money. However, this film is a much smaller project, but with actors who have already made quite a career. How Kurzel achieved that with this film is impressive.
Especially because the film demands quite a bit from the actors. They regularly have to put themselves in uncomfortable positions. The roles are often eccentric and daring, so I automatically have to praise them for that. It is just that the characters remain rather flat and empty. They are mainly figures that fill up the dreamy environment a bit.
The film is therefore difficult to call a real biography. It does follow the life of Ned Kelly, but ultimately it feels more like a snapshot than a narrative, as Kurzel seems much more concerned with the audiovisual presentation. Fortunately, he certainly knows how to do very well towards the final. Kurzel has mastered the atmosphere in an environment where this is difficult to achieve.
All in all, it is a bit too vague to properly communicate the most interesting content. I like what I just saw, but of course it could have been a combination of two strong directions. Kurzel is absolutely in the right place as a director, but he has not yet created a real masterpiece. Surely had to come one day.

The other Kelly Family. 
The story of Ned Kelly, according to some, an Australian Robin Hood, but actually a criminal who stole and murdered with a gang. In any case, the film does not make him a hero, but it does show how miserable his childhood was. It's not the mainstream narrative like that other gang: Jesse James. That has advantages and disadvantages. It is not a standard Hollywood film, but rather a bit messy with beautiful shots here and there. It's a bit incoherent. The cast doesn't do a bad job and visually you see some flare-ups here and there with a bright spot towards the finale. His actions were enough to make him a legend. But that is not the case with this film adaptation.
