Good film about a man who saves another man when he is on the run. The film is set during the gold rush in Oregon and the whole way of life at the time comes across as realistic and beautifully portrayed. A film about the friendship between the two men and their attempts to earn money. A slow pace, but this in combination with the beautiful images of Oregon makes the film a bit hypnotic at times.

A slow burner that will not be for everyone because of the slow pace and plot. The friendship between Cookie and King-Lu is actually central, which is very intense and natural. Together they decide to make pastries from which the milk comes from a cow. The cow is owned by a hothead and the milk is stolen inventively.

What is also striking is the excellent cinematography. Great images and setting of the 19th century US somewhere in the far northwest. A mixed bag of cultures passes by and King-Lu soon finds out that things sometimes go wrong. It was striking how fluent English that man spoke for a Chinese from that era.

The NRC and Volkskrant give the film 5 out of 5 stars, but the film did not really appeal to me: it is another incredibly slow film house film that is just as exciting as watching how paint dries... The film is very spherical , with beautiful nature in autumn colors, which stands for the untouched nature of the US: the film essentially tells the origins and being of America as a kind of blank slate (the still Wild West) and therefore the land of endless possibilities because everything that is done is new and everything can still be formed according to your wishes. But the incentive to entrepreneurship also brings competition, struggle and violence (which is contrasted in the almost homoerotic friendship between Cookie and King-Lu, who are therefore the misfits who do not fit in this America). The idea may not be bad, but the execution is weak because much too boring (you spend a large part of the film watching the baking of oliebollen…): eg Nomadland brings that being of America much more fascinating.
