Child's Play plot

"More than a toy... he's your best friend."

Karen Barclay works in a department store, where one day a Buddi - a highly sophisticated toy doll - is returned due to technical problems. Because she has no money for such a doll herself, Karen decides to pack this returned copy and give it as a gift to her son Andy. Andy soon discovers that this doll named Chucky is different; Chucky, for example, can learn many more things than the other Buddi dolls. That sounds fun at first, until Chucky learns about violence and murder.

Happily surprised.

I've been done with the series for a while though parts 1 and 2 are sacred to me. Partly nostalgia (have seen both films about 300 times, can even recite the voodoo spell) but I also think both films are really good and creepy, still now. Once every few years I put them on again.

Part 3 was still going, Bride of Chucky was still good fun in itself, but what came after, phew. I skipped that last one, Cult of Chucky. That's what I actually wanted to do with this one until I heard more and more positive messages. When Mark Hamill (of Star Wars fame), Aubrey Plaza (known for her deadly look), and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) turned out to be committed to it, I was already hooked. I was going to look at it, but I wasn't convinced yet whether I would like it all.

Chucky just looked disfigured, that should really bother me, right?

Well, that was okay for a while. I've been enjoying. It wasn't terribly scary, but it was fun. Cool kills, smooth story, funny jokes, and above all an own identity. That fugly face actually worked well for this story. All you have to do is let go of the original and open up to this new adventure, then you're in for a treat. Because although it shares elements of has-and winks to the original, it is something of its own.

The reason Chucky derailed and his progression in it were very nicely conceived and worked out.

The film wasn't bloodcurdling (I missed the childish tunes and the freaky tripping footsteps a bit) but it was a very successful horror-comedy. This was also a saving grace for The Dead Don't Die that I saw recently.

Difficult what grade I have to give. Swing between 3.5 and 4.0. Gonna let it sink in for a while, it may well be that I increase the number.

Child's Play without Brad Dourif is like Nighmare on Elm Street without Robert Englund. Elm Street's remake turned out to be a failure so you have to wonder how the idea of reviving Chucky came about, especially since that series of Cult of Chucky (2017) still seemed to be alive and kicking! However, Tyler Burton Smith wrote a screenplay with a very different, but very interesting angle that also placed this story firmly in the 21st century. The original Chucky was the result of a voodoo ritual performed by a serial killer, so it was a murderer in a doll's body. in this case, the deadly Buddi is the result of a programming error, made deliberately by an exploited worker who has been unceremoniously kicked out. The Buddi in question is self-learning, but lacks the proper coding to keep the doll from getting violent. Chucky is therefore a robot with no moral sense and is therefore literally not aware of any harm! Mark Hamill (as Luke Skywalker the ultimate hero for at least two generations of film buffs) is a brilliant choice for Chucky's voice and plays the part without irony, but with just the right mix of perfect innocence and subtle irony. All that isn't enough to turn this slasher into a masterpiece, but this is an admirable reboot of a series that probably ran out of steam in its original form. And how nice it is to see a horror film again that makes me sincerely look forward to the sequel!

Very bad this.. they shouldn't have done this I think.

The attempt to write Chucky to the present with all the gadgets etc is not really successful.

The only thing left to do is leave the gore...
