Delicious.

Nakashima making a horror film. I couldn't really picture it all at first, but in hindsight, it feels like a logical movie. It is part horror, part relationship drama, part Nakashima. A strange combination that results in a somewhat strange film, but is mostly just really enjoyable.

Visually, it is once again top-notch. Colors pop off the screen, and the camerawork is strong. The soundtrack is also used very effectively, even if it isn't all that special in itself. A fine example of how you can still make an impression with fairly typical music. And the cast performs adequately again, as always in Nakashima's films.

A few brutal scenes, a few brilliant eye candy moments, and an interesting backstory. Don't go watch this with a pure horror mindset, because then it won't amount to much (apart from a few moments), but otherwise a delightful film that I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end.

4.5* and an extensive review

Strong.

For now, this is also the last Nakashima I’m going to watch. My goodness his films can deliver some hard blows, although I can happily conclude that of all the films I’ve seen by him, this one is the least steel-hard. That might also be because this is actually more of a horror film, and leaves the seriously heavy subjects somewhat behind.

If you are familiar with director Nakashima, it will come as no surprise that his films look seriously visually strong. Wonderful editing and great colors flow well together. Cinematographically polished down to the last detail. In fact, this film is visually executed to perfection. I simply cannot fault it; Nakashima knows exactly what I like.

Furthermore, the acting is mediocre. That Kuroki isn't very good at it, but the child itself could have been cast better as well. I always find someone in these kinds of films annoying because they just can't act, and here is no exception. Other roles are filled adequately, but unfortunately, I didn't find anyone who really stood out.

For the die-hard horror fan, this might not be the ideal film. After all, this film features a large number of dramatic scenes. I believe Nakashima enjoys playing with subjects like grief and betrayal. His other films already featured these themes, and It Comes is full of them as well. It is starting to become familiar territory for him, but it is nonetheless nicely executed.

The spectacular finale is the icing on the cake for this visually brilliant film. The story is somewhat less impressive, and the plot is a bit simpler here than in other Nakashima films. The man can write beautiful and intelligent stories, but this film is somewhat restrained in that regard. Otherwise, it is a fast-paced, strong, and at times spectacular film that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Four stars, although that is the meager minimum for a Nakashima.

It should come as no surprise that the visual execution is adequate, although it is not a feast of excesses like in Paco or Kamikaze Girls; even the understated compositions in Confessions had more impact than the visuals here, which remained somewhat more supportive in nature. Nevertheless, there is little to criticize; the camera and editing are on point, but a few carefully crafted framings do occasionally make you sit up and take notice.

The narrative structure is a shifting jigsaw puzzle of timelines and perspectives, a bit unnecessarily messy to my taste, but it does lend the film a character of its own by allowing the plot to reveal itself through various hatches (and color filters), although I sometimes got the impression that it obscures the sparseness of the plot more than it adds value. The soundtrack and score are an added value in this regard, as Nakashima effectively manages to elevate his scenes with them, craftsman that he is.

Given the long running time, I was left wanting more, even though the finale really does manage to pull out some extra audiovisual stops. After Confessions and Kanako, it somehow feels a bit like a snack, so I am still looking forward to his latest, but for now, my 4* feels a bit on the generous side.
