A pretty decent horror film from Indonesia, but one that also has its flaws. In "May the Devil Take You," we see a demon possessing all sorts of people, resulting in a lot of cool scenes and (as mentioned many times before) an Evil Dead-esque film. To start on a positive note, the film looks pretty good, and Tjahjanto also manages to conjure up some good creepy scenes and excellent jump scares. However, while the scenes themselves often work, I found the overall plot and central theme rather confusing and difficult to follow. Yes, something about selling souls, demonic possession, voodoo, that sort of thing, but I couldn't make much of it, and that somewhat detracted from my film experience. The film could easily have been about twenty minutes shorter. But nonetheless, a more than satisfactory rating, and Tjahjanto is a director who definitely has something to offer and from whom I'll be seeking out more.

Tjahjanto surprisingly released one of the best horror films of the decade towards the end of the 2000s. Macabre (2009) was—as is the case here—a mishmash of familiar (Western) genre tropes with an Eastern twist. A director who clearly understands the genre and is so deeply rooted that he effortlessly integrates those elements into his other work (The Night Comes for Us (2018) ). You notice that in everything here, too. There's a certain directness in his approach that, even if the ideas aren't exactly original, gives them new life. You automatically go along with it. While it clearly suffers from an overly long runtime, it's good to see that it's generally well-received and even followed up with a sequel. A genre film through and through.

There's a lot of ghost in the film, which makes it a bit dull. It keeps appearing every two minutes, and not like your typical ghost that scares you one person at a time in the dark. It just comes out at everyone, in broad daylight, always opening its mouth, and you just want to punch it in the face.

On top of that, the acting is atrocious, especially the actor who played Alfie. There's no plot or character development. I wanted to disinfect my eyes and brain after watching this.
