The new Sorrentino is a visual exercise par excellence, but not memorable. In Loro, we see entrepreneur and politician Silvio Berlusconi (a strong performance by Toni Servillo) as a media tycoon, a shareholder in AC Milan, and, of course, as a politician and Prime Minister of Italy. A real plot is lacking, and as a result, the film can come across as dull and empty. However, Loro is not: Toni Servillo's performance as the (Botox-enhanced) eternally smiling yet cunning crook Berlusconi, who suffers from delusions of grandeur and almost desperately tries to maintain a youthful image (and ignore his age) is highly entertaining. The same goes for Riccardio Scamarcio's performance (as the sneaky pimp Sergio Morra), who does everything he can to curry favor with Berlusconi. Both deliver hilarious, pitiful, and infuriating scenes. Sorrentino cleverly avoids the trap of turning Berlusconi into a caricature; that would likely have failed because Berlusconi is already more or less a caricature of himself. The cinematography and well-chosen score make up for a lot, and you could even say they more than compensate for the lack of plot. Through all the stunning images (leave that to Sorrentino) and the endless female beauty, one can also discern the loneliness and (emotional) emptiness that slowly creeps into Berlusconi's life (or perhaps has been there all along, but which he tries to conceal or compensate for with his extravagant and lavish lifestyle). This latter aspect ultimately gives the film some depth, with two scenes in particular (one between Berlusconi and a 20-year-old girl he's trying to seduce, and one between Berlusconi and his wife, who brutally tells him the truth) remaining etched in the memory. Loro doesn't have many other memorable scenes, which means the film isn't particularly special (though it is definitely worth seeing).

Loro is a more than decent, dynamic, and visually explosive film about Silvio Berlusconi. It's not a pure biopic; it was a bit too one-sided for that, but I did enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, music, satire, and acting. The first part, in particular, was quite enjoyable. Later in the film, it becomes a bit duller, and I found myself less and less captivated.

Toni Servillo gave a fantastic performance as the charismatic and arrogant Berlusconi. A joy to watch. Later in the film, marital problems arise, and then the drama fades somewhat, although the confrontation/conversation with his wife was an excellent scene. Berlusconi is a truly fascinating figure. He's practically the Donald Trump before his time, one who makes you wonder how on earth he managed to occupy the highest office in the land, knowing he's constantly telling you lies.

A bit caricatural and repetitive at times, but overall worth seeing once. However, within both the biopic and visually stunning genres, there are better ones out there. So, it's a pass.

A star-less review because my feelings about the film are so subjective that it's even too personally colored for a review.

My boyfriend decided we should visit the arthouse cinema again and chose this film. He didn't grow up in Europe and barely knew Berlusconi, while I know Berlusconi a bit better and was (in hindsight, very naively) afraid of a film with a lot of politics in it. (Not my favorite genre.) And I wasn't particularly fond of Berlusconi anyway, so that didn't help either.

I went to the movie with some reluctance, and after fifteen minutes I was already considering leaving. Ultimately, I didn't, because I didn't want to upset my friend, who seemed to be enjoying himself. In hindsight, though, I should have.

My problem with the film? Several men in this film (not just Mr. B. himself) are mercilessly unfaithful, trading one woman for another and trying to keep the woman they do love, but not at the expense of their sexually promiscuous lifestyle.
Result: my boyfriend found the men in this film "interesting characters" in a way that felt completely foreign to me. They reminded me exactly of an important figure from my childhood, and it stirred up a lot of very unpleasant feelings. Then the apparent caricature fades away very quickly. All in all, it caused me enormous inner turmoil, which had repercussions for weeks.

Because of this, I completely ignored other aspects of the film, and therefore I won't be giving it a star rating. I don't want to judge the filmmakers based on the characters they portray in the film.

But I know for sure: I never want to see this film again.
