Extremely unbalanced film failed as a comedy, but nevertheless has some heartwarming and moving moments. The first half hour is alternately ludicrous and sometimes downright offensive: Ellie [Rose Byrne] and Pete [Mark Wahlberg] suddenly come up with the idea of adopting a child, abandon it, but on an impulse decide to do it anyway. The parenting course is a disgrace, as are the stereotypical characters of the other participants, some of whom have even more dubious motives than the two main characters. The jokes around Juan [Gustavo Quiroz] and Lita [Julianna Gamiz] are bland and the shrewdness of Byrne and Wahlberg obviously doesn't make it any more fun. But Isabelle Moner paints a beautifully dramatic portrait as the teenager who clings to a reunion with her biological mother. The scene with the brush is a strong dramatic moment, but seems to come from a completely different movie. Julie Hagerty and Michael O'Keefe are hilarious as Ellie's parents, and Margo Martindale steals the film as Pete's exuberant mother and is responsible for the most beautiful, painful moment in the film. The last quarter contains more moments like that, but can't save the film as it heads to the somewhat easygoing - but apparently inevitable - happy ending. A very frustrating experience, because with more depth and less superficial humor this could have been a strong drama that would have done justice to this sensitive and extremely relevant theme.

What a wonderful film about a serious subject. It's been years since I laughed so hard at a movie. Great fun jokes, in addition to realistic and moving moments. And of course these kinds of movies have to end feeling good according to the strict laws within the genre. But when you see the credits and see all those photos of beautiful families, your heart breaks. Deep bow to the makers and writers and the excellent cast. Must-see for the upcoming corona Christmas.

Surprisingly fun film with some memorable scenes, of which the table prayer scene is the best example I think. It's very bland at times, but because it's so consistently maintained, it works. Despite that blandness, it is not a superficial film and at times it is even very moving. I also just love the relationship between Pete and Ellie, who really work as a team and clearly love each other. That's nice from a Hollywood that I get the impression that only dysfunctional relationships are interesting. Four stars feels a lot for a film that doesn't seem to have taken itself very seriously either, but I wasn't bored for a second, I laughed and cried and two days later I'm still thinking about the dilemmas that the film outlines. So just good!
