Før Frosten plot
As winter approaches in rural 1850s Denmark, an old farmer (Jens) and his family face starvation. The harsh conditions and the prospect of another tough winter, Jens has to make an unbearable choice. If the family is to survive, he must make a deal with the rich farmer on the nearby farm and abandon his own morals and the most valuable possession he has in order to give them all a better life.

The film is slow – almost boring – but the story has just enough development and tension to hold the attention, and it also helps that the film is atmospheric and convincingly transports you to 19th century Danish rural life. The film has a Faustian theme in which a farmer who has fallen into poverty (as a result of globalization) sells his soul to escape from hunger and poverty and gain prestige in the form of a place at the front of the church.

Beautiful but bitter film about tough times in Denmark... Hunger, poverty, hopelessness. Basically a film about survival that everyone should see, if only to realize how good we have it now...

The rich only get richer, often on top of the misery of the poor. So it has always been and so it always will be. And the conservative faith is never far away either, because God is always present and has a purpose in everything.
Excellent acting by the entire cast and the atmosphere of gloom and grimness comes to the fore. Not that the film has left an indelible impression, but it is certainly not bad. Depressing sit, with enough conviction to maintain credibility.
