We've been getting about 50 superhero movies a week for a long time, half of which seem to be with Spider-Man. Next year the best boy will also be in two big blockbusters. Meanwhile, the studios are competing for the best superhero movie of the year. Marvel is coming in 2018 with heavy artillery with Black Panther and Infinity War, DC is coming with Aquaman and Fox used blockbuster Deadpool again. With all these facts, I find it very witty and clever that a 'cartoon' from Sony is without a doubt the best superhero film of the year. And the best Spider-Man movie we ever got so far. And arguably one of the best superhero movies of all time.

And I didn't expect that when I first heard about this project a few months ago. But oh, how fun this is. Exquisitely made, creative, colorful and very witty. It's pretty clear that Lord and Miller are behind this project, the film tastes very much like their successful comedies. But also visually Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is strong; the animation mixes a lot of styles and it feels refreshing, a nice own style. We know of some movies that want to feel like a comic book, but none did it as strongly as here; this is just a comic book. In addition, the action scenes are of a high level. Such a chase with The Prowler is a very strong scene, which many live-action superhero films can still suck at. The action is superb and at the same time I had a great laugh. Sometimes the humor is quite in your face and almost Deadpool-esque (cheating previous Spider-Man movies) and at the same time it's also full of small moments and subtler jokes. The film is a bit on the long side (sigh, the last time a movie lasted 90 minutes seems ages ago), but otherwise Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is totally against my expectations and really the best superhero film of 2018. Hats off, Sony.

4 stars.

Exceptional.

Rarely do you get an American animation that seems so limitless visually. And that for a film that falls within one of the narrowest niches (the superhero genre). Normally there is no room for individuality, originality and creativity here.

But look, sometimes it seems to be possible. A brilliant visual trip that is actually reminiscent of the work of Studio 4°C. Then, if you want to make something different with that money, you get the same seasoned success formulas over and over again.

Unfortunately, the voice acting is poor (with well-known stars whose voices leave too much of an imprint on the characters) and the humor, especially the direct jokes, is still really bad. They're minuses, but they can't really affect the overall tenor of the film. Definitely worth it.

4.0* and a extended review
