The latest Spider-Man trilogy was an enormous success for Sony and Marvel, with Tom Holland recognised by some as the best version of Peter Parker we have seen
Prior to Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield portrayed the Webslinger before the character was officially introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War.
Holland would go on to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home. There has, however, been another Spidey franchise going on independently of the other, with the animated movie Into the Spider-Verse earning Marvel one of their highest-rated productions.
And, even Holland himself reckons Into the Spider-Verse is the best movie focusing on Peter Parker, with the sequel Across the Spider-Verse now released to critical acclaim.
"I think the first Spider-Verse movie is the best Spider-Man movie that’s ever been made," he said, as reported by Variety.
"I’m so proud of everyone involved. Amy Pascal is like my mom. I was supposed to go with her as her date, I couldn’t go because I’m here working . But I’m incredibly proud of them, I’m excited for the second one. I’m sure it will live up to every expectation, and I can’t wait to see it."
Across the Spider-Verse reviews
Marvel and Sony hit another home run with Across the Spider-Verse.
Before it was released, a few lucky members of the movie community had the opportunity to watch the movie, and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive.
"OK. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lives one step above Masterpiece. It's an actual work of art. Every frame deserves to be hung in a museum. The jokes and nods to Spidey lore are perfect. It's OUTSTANDING. The best Spider-Man movie. Might be my favourite movie ever. Cherish it." - Sean O'Connell (@Sean_OConnell) of Cinemablend.
"Across the #SpiderVerse is simply an incredible accomplishment. It’s stunning but also very much an unfinished story by its end. Visually, it’s such a stunning achievement. It’s everything a #SpiderMan fan could ask for and much more. So good, it’s hard to believe it exists." - Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) of ComicBook.com
"#SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse is yet another resounding win for the Lord Miller-produced universe. Hailee Steinfeld really comes into her own as Gwen Stacy, and her scenes with Shea Whigham's Captain Stacy are truly special. It's darker and sadder than I expected, but necessary." - Brian Davids (@PickYourBrian) of The Hollywood Reporter.
"Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse raised the bar with its unique animation style & way of storytelling. Minds were blown when it was released & fans thought there was no way it could be topped. Think again. #SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse raises its own bar which seemed impossible." - Tessa Smith (@MamasGeeky) of Rotten Tomatoes.
"SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is not surprisingly terrific. It’s a bigger story, spread out over this movie and next, but it’s still about Miles just wanting to be accepted for who he is. (There are *a lot* of Spider-People in this movie.) I laughed out loud like 8 times." - Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) of Uproxx.
"#SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse is a stunning achievement. Yes, it’s visually dazzling, with expansive, expressive new realms (Gwen’s world is my favourite). But the movie’s real superpower is its emotional depth and its beautiful, melancholic tone. I love this movie so, so much." - Drew Taylor (DrewTailored) of The Wrap.
