A fine film. Beautiful, clear, and colorful images. It's neither too long nor too short, and the two leads perform well. I find some of the supporting characters less effective. The story begins as primarily romantic, but takes a very poignant turn towards the end. The fact that the film is banned in Kenya makes it even more poignant. It's a shame that many countries still view homosexuality so negatively and refuse to accept it. I actually find it positive that films like this are made, because they challenge the taboo, which, in my opinion, doesn't have to be taboo. A 7. 3.5*

When two young women fall in love, all hell breaks loose. Especially since they are the daughters of two political rivals.

A commendable attempt to bring a lesbian relationship into the spotlight in a conservative society where not only is homosexuality prohibited by law, but political divisions also easily reach boiling point.

Director Wanuri Kahiu has created an emotional, authentic drama without resorting to false sentimentality. Considering the film's inexperience, the acting is remarkably strong, especially by Samantha Mugatsia as Kena.

My first encounter with a film from Kenya was extremely enjoyable.

The intro is really cool, with great editing, lovely music, and atmospheric visuals—you're immediately drawn into the world. It's a shame the rest is much duller. The acting is flat (too flat to truly engage), the story surrounding this theme has been told a thousand times, and visually, it suddenly becomes much duller. There are some nice colors and some nice moments between the two women, but not enough for the limited running time. 2.5 stars.
