El Reino
El Reino starts a bit messy, and because of the many (fast-talking) characters that are introduced you can no longer see the wood for the trees. But after the movie settles down, and the focus really shifts to Manuel and his corrupt and manipulative dealings, things get a lot better. The actors are great, and it's nice to see that all those characters are really important to the story. Such a journalist (Bárbara Lennie) seems to hang around a bit at first, but in the end she has the best scene in the film together with Manuel. Lennie and De la Torre are unparalleled in this verbal duel.

Had a hard time getting into the film for a long time because the following camera and the driving score contrast with a hollow, aloof main character and a somewhat generically sketched plot. In the long run, there will be some cracks in that perception, when the screenplay hints at the why of that flat character sketch for the first time. Things eventually come to a climax in a truly brilliant final scene, but before that El Reino has one of the most intensely filmed car chases (including an accident) I've seen in a long time. This is not least due to the way in which the sound has been used (or rather: omitted).
