Sofia plot

Sofia lives with her parents in Casablanca. During a dinner with the family she gets a terrible stomachache after which her water breaks. The fact that she is about to give birth is hidden from the others and she leaves for the hospital with her niece under the guise of having eaten too much. The hospital staff eventually agrees to help Sofia, as long as she can hand over her marriage certificate. If not, the police will be notified.

Good film. It interested me the entire length and the time passed quickly. The story appealed to me. I was not very surprised by the twist at the end, but I also do not find the film predictable. How awful that in Morocco you can end up in prison if you have a child without being married. Rapists deserve punishment, but if that does not play a role I find it bizarre. Well played and beautiful image. 3.5*

The film is in fact an indictment of the (by our standards) outdated legislation in Morocco on sex outside marriage. When a daughter of a wealthy family gives birth to an illegitimate child, she points out a former colleague at a call center as the father in order to avoid a prison sentence. The film leaves what really happened in the middle because the past of the new mother is not highlighted. Ultimately, this leads to an unsatisfactory conclusion in my opinion.

The film is therefore not at all a success, with the exception of Sarah Perles' performance as the title character's modern cousin.

The film opens with a section of the Moroccan civil code stating that sexual acts outside of marriage are punishable. The plot suggests that a 'marriage of convenience' regularizes matters, but in reality it often has to be more complex.

That's what I missed in this film, to be honest. The depth and the will to elaborate on certain events. It all felt quite easy and tame. Little to no family tensions, limited problems with the government, little to no consequences from the environment ... There was a ready-made solution for everything or it was simply ignored.

I also didn't understand where the film wanted to go with the twist. And it wasn't elaborated on. I had to think for a moment who that Ahmed was. The Belgian Lubna Azabal was on a roll again, although she wasn't helped by the plot. She can do much better and she already proved that. She keeps things straight on her own.
