Don't Leave Home plot

In her latest exhibition, the artist Melanie Thomas deals with the infamous Irish urban legend about the priest Alistair Burke, who painted a portrait of eight-year-old Siobhan Callahan in 1986. The latter disappeared days later, as did her portrait in the painting. Burke renounced the priesthood and has been isolated ever since. When Melanie is contacted by the same Burke asking to travel to Ireland, she accepts the offer. Little does she know that some urban legends may be true.

Poor.

While watching, I wondered if this was a film by a novice director. One who'd been led to believe they needed to direct a horror film to break through, and then got completely fed up halfway through. That's how this film feels.

It's odd then that Tully already has a few credits to his name; the fact that his previous one was an 80s love letter comedy only makes it even crazier. I have no idea what possesses him to make a film like this, but it's clear he has absolutely no talent for it.

The film is classified as a mystery/thriller, but I wonder if it's not just a complete failure. There are plenty of moments that feel ripped off from the horror genre, but the execution is so lifeless that it can only be considered a thriller.

The direction is subpar, the story is cliché (and 15 minutes too long), and the acting is also mediocre. While you can see Tully has the necessary technical expertise, she has no connection to the genre. So, best left alone, unless you're truly desperate. It probably would have been better to postpone this film for another month or so; the desperation for horror tends to be higher around Halloween.

1.5*

A beautiful, eccentric mystery thriller; spooky, understated, a bit claustrophobic, yet delicate. A highly original story. Casting and actors: impeccable. Special attention to the editing, soundtrack, and music. Horror fans will understand this completely, because if you expect porn and get romance, it's always a bit disappointing.

A truly captivating film! More mystery than horror, thankfully!
