yuck.

Because this was a mess. A broken romantic comedy with really awful stereotypes. One already says it in the beginning: an American Asian is different from an Asian Asian, so this film was clearly made by American Asians, who, because of their background, are allowed to brush through all stereotypes with the coarse brush. Imagine if a white director had been behind this.

Should it still be something fun, okay? But this is a very low level. The humor is terrible (what a role for Awkwafina and Ken Jeong too, only Yeoh manages to hold his own a bit), the kitschy rich stuff isn't even that impressive and the plot couldn't be interesting at all.

I've already seen To make these kinds of films, there are now enough of these kinds of Asian films to speak of a small niche. So this American copy makes little sense. You notice at the end that it's just a real American film, where the American vision nicely beats the Eastern, because that's how they are.

Onding that has undeservedly received a lot of attention, but you often get that with those cast-hype films. The movie behind it usually isn't much. The only positive thing is that the locations are lush and well portrayed. A meager consolation.

Crazy Rich Asians is a standard rom-com, wrapped in an Asian sauce. The boyfriend of the lead actress turns out to be very rich and on a visit to Singapore for a wedding she has to fight against all these prejudices and the fact that she is of humble origin. It's mostly an American take on this whole thing and you see just about every Asian actor who is hot right now in Crazy Rich Asians. These types of movies are hot right now. Whether it concerns women in movies, black people or in this case Asians, an outlet is apparently needed.

The film also has to have the cheerful vibe and the infectious Wu in the lead role. I totally believe the relationship she has with Golding because they have a great chemistry together and I feel the love they have for each other when they look each other in the eye. Although I wonder if she knows what Google is, since after a year she still doesn't know anything about him.

This chemistry ensures that the film remains watchable, because it is occasionally a bit too long and there are unnecessary trips to characters that mean nothing to the plot.

Tight 3.0*

Not much more than a princess movie of sorts with Asian-American cameos and a somewhat unusual setting. You know them. The 'normal' young woman who falls in love with a young man and then finds out that he comes from a very wealthy family line. And of course the mother-in-law-to-be doesn't like her little prince getting involved with the mob. Funny that aristocratic fantasies are apparently very easy to translate into capitalist success stories. Have the very idea that 'Crazy Rich Asians' (2018) went for a Johan Nijenhuis-esque set-up to put Singapore on the map as a hip and trendy holiday destination. A commercial with a wafer-thin story around the nightlife in a dynamic metropolis and, for a change, the idyll of a seaside resort. Everything looks enticing and sexy. A bit bland to be very negative about a genre film of which I am clearly not the target audience. For lovers of this kind of romantic fantasy it will be okay and the ethnically diverse cast is definitely a plus. It's a shame that a comedic talent like Constance Wu (she's very witty in 'Fresh off the Boat') gets little personality.
