La Quietud plot

Eugenia returns from Paris to La Quietud, her family's estate, to care for her father who suffered a stroke. She is reunited with her sister Mia and their mother, whom she has not seen for fifteen years. There is still some resentment between the sisters, but just as much is their love that has survived the great distance between them. Partly because of the shared trauma from their past and the difficult relationship with their parents.

The veiled shadow of the military regime in Argentina – the late 1970s, early 1980s – forms the chilly backdrop for this layered, sensual family drama, in which corpses regularly fall out of the closet. The unnecessarily long lesbian scene in the beginning seems mainly intended for the box office.

A bitter film that benefits significantly from the carefully chosen casting of the two sisters. Initially it is not easy to determine who is who.

There are quite a few Argentinian films about a family that has something wrong with it. I know a few. This is also one. Not my favorite genre. There's a lot of things bubbling beneath the surface. The paterfamilias wants to sort out everything from the past, but is then struck down by a stroke, which reunites the sisters. In fact, I had a hard time telling them apart.

My biggest objection is that it takes an excruciatingly long time before the story gets going and some of the (many) veils are lifted. Only after an hour will there be any insight into this. And half-heartedly too, which is why I wonder if I understood everything correctly. It turns out that one sister's husband is also doing it to the other sister, and quite roughly too. And their parents seem to have played a rather reprehensible role during the military dictatorship. But what exactly was not clear to me. Nor what exactly the mother is suspected of. The ending raised quite a few questions for me.
