Oiktos plot

"Stay sad."

Pity tells the story of Giannis, a man who prefers to be unhappy. A man wedded to smart. When this lawyer's wife wakes up from a coma after a long time, he suddenly has to do without the compassion that was so generously available for a long time. He can no longer do without, and takes measures to qualify for more.

The film is of the same kind as The Lobster (2015) - MovieMeter.nl and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - MovieMeter.nl, which films I could appreciate but with this one I could do little (just as I could do little with Kynodontas (2009) - MovieMeter.nl which also belongs in that list). I think because the subject of the film does not interest me much and I could not find any depth in what I saw. The film actually offers nothing more than what the description and trailer show: a man who is not happy when his wife gets better because somehow he only experiences happiness when he gets pity from those around him for his loss. For me, the film mainly raised the question of what is wrong with this man and then I think of a kind of social Munchausen by proxy (and anyway he does not seem to love his wife or other loved ones, so in that respect it is not so absurd that he is disappointed when his wife gets better). Just like in The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - MovieMeter.nl the man also acts completely emotionless or robotic, which is clearly a theme of the film: the man also cannot cry, which for some reason he suffers greatly from and he says somewhere that crying in films is always so fake. However, I have no idea what the film wants to say with all this. I may have missed all the depth – I was tired when I saw the film – but to me the film came across as as empty as the man it is about.

This is a film that I can do very little with and in which (also) I could not find any depth. It is striking how positive the film press is in one way or another about this film, where among other things they speak of 'layering'. It may be my fault that I could not discover that layering. Apart from that, I mainly experienced Pity as a tiring, boring film and for a long time it was also unclear what I was actually watching. Because the sorrow of the main character did not feel sincere anywhere and his actions took on increasingly grotesque forms, I ultimately decided that I was mainly dealing with satire. Unfortunately (again) of the less pleasant kind. For me, Pity is ultimately mainly a failed study of a lonely, misunderstood man with a serious psychiatric illness.

A solid film about a man who wallows in self-pity and gets the necessary attention for it. That longing for attention and self-pity is pathetic and manipulated. You can't call your character very sympathetic. That's not necessary either.

Here and there they try to pump in some satire. Sometimes successful, sometimes too weak. Although it could have been spicier in my opinion.

Not the cock of the walk here, but the underdog who pulls the sheet towards himself and walks away with the attention. But to say that he really becomes happier because of that? It is more of a disease. That man deserves help. Well acted, that is for sure. The ending could indeed be better.
