I picked this one up from the library, but it wasn't quite my cup of tea. The story held less of an interest for me, despite its relatively short running time. The cast, however, did a decent job.

Good for one time, but don't need to see this again.

A sensitive drama that relies primarily on solid acting, though I think a bit more (Italian) temperament would have benefited the film. Alba Rohrwacher's performance stands out, but that's hardly surprising, really. The role of the slutty mother seems tailor-made for her.

In the Old Testament, a judgment of Solomon was necessary when two women argued over a child. Here, too, two women say, "Vittoria is my daughter." Her adoptive mother, Tina, handles her responsibility well. She would score highly on a Child and Family evaluation. Her biological mother, Angelica, on the other hand, is a debauched alcoholic in debt. Her life is a shambles. Yet, a bond develops between Vittoria and Angelica, much to Tina's dismay. The child lives in confusion and retreats into oblivion.

It's loosely based on the autobiography of American AM Homes, but Laura Bispuri relocated the story to a village in Sardinia. This results in beautiful nature scenes and the simple life in the countryside. They have electricity and cars, yet it feels like stepping back half a century. The actors are followed by a handheld camera. Effects and sentimental music are avoided. The austere style and social themes are reminiscent of Italian neorealism of the past.

Alba Rohrwacher, the eldest of two sisters, plays the unglamorous role of Angelica. Valeria Golina takes on the role. Redhead Sara Casu plays one of the best child roles of this century, very spontaneous and natural. It's a lifelike drama with emotional depth and beautiful locations.
