Sergei Dovlatov [Milan Maric] lived long enough to see the fall of the Berlin Wall, but not to be recognized as one of the most important Russian writers of his generation. This film helped a new generation of readers in Russia and far beyond to become acquainted with this journalist and follows him over four days in 1971 in a wintry St. Petersburg. His experience as a camp guard helps him organize and attend meetings with intellectuals. Consists for a considerable part of conversations about literature that were out of the question at the time and the lack of story and action is a bit frustrating. But German Jr.'s reconstruction of Russia in 1971 is convincing, not least because of the outstanding (and multi-award-winning) contribution of art director, production designer and costume designer Elena Okopnya.
