Had gone to this movie with my niece unprepared.

At first we thought we had got the wrong movie because of the war scene. It wasn't until I saw Streep wake up in bed that I knew we were on the right track. In the beginning I was quite overwhelmed with information and I can imagine, what a previous reaction visitor also suggested, that young people who have never even globally learned the history of this story, have a hard time following. Advice : read a bit (if necessary via Wikipedia) about President Nixon / Watergate before you watch this film.

But after so intensive impressions to sink in, it became a wonderful film. With lumps in the throat moments to emotional tears (I only get when I really like something). Beautiful film with beautiful shots of the printing machines, etc

Excellent film in which a newspaper that has just gone on the stock exchange comes into possession of sensitive information about the Vietnam War. Fairly complicated as several lines are plotted, but Steven Spielberg keeps the reins tight, making this an entertaining film. For example, the different and often conflicting interests of the two main characters are well developed. Also a great outfit and good acting.

An interesting subject, especially considering the current era, and of course made for that reason, but I wonder how effective this film is and whether film is the right medium for this.

Some good roles for Streep and Hanks (which I didn't recognize at first), but this film doesn't really get lively. Events around a newspaper are simply not the most spectacular subject and the film is therefore mainly based on a large amount of dialogues, in which many names are mentioned, sometimes making me wonder who is who again. Then you can try to spice it up with heroic music à la Indiana Jones, but it doesn't get any smoother, and the music just feels hugely out of place.

The message the film tries to convey is of course a good one, but I wonder if Spielberg is reaching its intended audience. I've met some Trump supporters in the US and I don't think they'd be interested in seeing this film. Everything that comes out of Hollywood is suspicious in those circles from the outset. In short, this seems more like a sermon for its own parish.

A movie with good intentions, but the opposite of good is often well intentioned. So is this film, because as film it is all a bit disappointing. 1.5*.
