The end of the Maze Runner trilogy, like its predecessors, is by no means a great film. I could never make much chocolate out of the story anyway - a kind of Hunger Games in a Resident Evil jacket, but very cumbersome - and that is no different here. Anyway, this movie assumes that you can remember exactly what happened in the previous movies, so it helps if you've seen it. A confusing story around a serum - does it work or does it not work? - and the completely colorless Dylan O'Brien in the lead role (the biggest flaw in the series) are clear downsides. Will Poulter happily returns as Gally and his presence lifts the film to an acceptable level. The action scenes are well filmed and thank God also edited in such a way that the action remains clear. The special effects and make-up are also excellent, but I especially like the score by John Paesano who composed an old-fashioned orchestral score, made limited use of percussion - something I really hate - and with some nice effective themes takes the hollow drama of the screenplay to a higher level. So technically excellent, but with the weak O'Brien and a hasty finale that leaves several questions unanswered, it's a somewhat disappointing end to a somewhat disappointing trilogy.

A Maze Runner that differs slightly from the previous parts, because this is the last part and should be closed. I especially like the close-range-action scenes. This raises the number for me. The content of the film is somewhat disappointing and it is not what you are used to like from the previous parts. Obviously because the Maze now plays a minor role. That is unfortunate on the one hand, but understandable for a closing part. The story is slightly thin, but if you know the previous parts it is still somewhat manageable. Reminds me a lot of an Insurgent or a Hunger Games: Mockingjay final setup, but a little more chaotic. The film has yet to sink in for me. He wasn't very interesting, but in hindsight he wasn't particularly bad or annoying. Especially personally disappointing is the right word for me at the moment I think...

“Three years we spent behind those walls, trying to break out. And now you want us to break back in.”

The best part of the trilogy. Too long and sometimes too much of the same (another breakout/break-in), but the action looks fantastic and O'Brien remains a strong protagonist. Actors like Scodelario, Esposito, Salazar, Brodie-Sangster and Poulter are also good, and the most important thing is that you really empathize with the characters. Because otherwise The Death Cure would have become an elongated and boring action hicle, but now you as a viewer are also more involved in the story. Although it's also just an entertaining blockbuster.
