Strange romantic thriller was a nice excuse for the cast to spend some time in an exotic location. Matthew McConaughey plays Baker Dill, a fisherman on Plymouth Island, who is obsessed with catching a huge fish and spends his nights in the arms of Constance [Diane Lane in a very thankless role]. Dill earns some extra money by taking rich tourists on his boat 'Serenity'. His newest client is an arrogant and extremely unfriendly Frank Zarlakas [Jason Clarke], whose poor wife [Anne Hathaway] is an old acquaintance of Dill's.

A ridiculously overblown melodrama in which a lot is talked about what needs to be done, but in which it takes a very long time before push comes to shove. By that time it's already clear that the screenplay is a mess of incoherent ideas and although the 'surprising twist' in the finale offers a possible explanation, you can't help but say that the cause lies in the shrewd work of the screenwriter/director Steven Knight who completely misses the point on both fronts. It's hard to come up with a final twist that takes the level of an already dubious film to an even lower level, but Knight succeeds with flying colors. That is not, by the way, why this film still gets an extra half star, that honor goes to Jess Hall who has managed to portray everything in a beautiful way.

Serenity isn't really a high flyer at anything, but I can't argue that it was all that bad. The plot wants to get the viewer lost with some twists, but because it all goes a bit messy, this doesn't work very well. Still, the plot is representative enough and the setting, the acting and the beautiful locations are all together good enough to watch the film, in my opinion.

Reasonable drama with a touch of mystery and thriller sauce. The story is good but could have been developed better. You can see the so-called twist coming from afar. That's a shame because without the good twist, the film is pretty average and not really special. Thanks to the good cast, the film is somewhat saved and remains quite interesting. Visually, the film looks great with beautiful Caribbean shots. 3.0
