Raw film about life in the Caucasus with its multifaceted ethnic tensions. Messy and confrontational like life there. I often closed my eyes during the sniffing part, because I don't want to expose myself to these kinds of shocking images. Apart from that, a fascinating film with excellent natural acting, especially from protagonist Darya Zhovnar.

It is a typical slow arthouse film that someone else may experience as extremely boring, but for some reason the film immediately grabbed me and intrigued me, probably because of its rawness and the life shown in the 90s before the internet that evokes nostalgic feelings. aroused in me. But the story is also fascinating: the atmosphere is always threatening - the main characters are clearly not wanted by everyone as Jews and to make matters worse, the daughter of the house is rebellious, which also creates great tension in the family and the Jewish community - with strong scenes and an interesting theme about going or staying or losing what you love or proximity vs. removal (to which the title also refers), which theme plays on different levels for both the family and the bond between parent and child. The story is not spelled out, but leaves much to the viewer's interpretation, making the empathetic viewer aware of the complex emotions and decisions that the characters undergo and have to make.

The film is therefore successful in every respect and is an impressive debut. In fact, the film has a special place in my heart. Between four and four-and-a-half stars.

An oppressive but above all interesting film about close family ties against the background of a simmering complex ethnic and political conflict. Tesnota focuses on Ilana (Darya Zhovnar), a headstrong and self-confident young Jewish woman who lives with her brother with her parents in Nalchik, the capital of the autonomous Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. The family is tested and threatens to be torn apart when Ilana's brother is kidnapped and a ransom has to be paid, but also by Ilana's relationship with a boy who is Kabard.

In my opinion, Darya Zhovnar is a real find: the way in which she portrays Ilana as an outwardly somewhat nonchalant and boyish woman (also in her actions) who cares little about her appearance, but who internally struggles with, for example, her role in the family , is of special quality. Her appearance somehow had a magnetic effect on me too.

Apart from the theme, the filming method (the lighting, the use of color, the 'rough' environment) contributes to the oppressive feeling that the film evokes. This is further reinforced by the (much-discussed) beheading video that has been inserted in between and for which warnings are given in advance here and there. A daring choice by the director, which in my opinion works out well, because it puts the film even more on edge.

All in all, a raw film that also has a veil of beauty due to the filming method.
