Interesting debut.

I had never heard of the Mulleavy sisters, but it didn't surprise me that they run an unconventional fashion brand. Their directorial debut is anything but an orthodox film.

Although there are certainly heavy themes touched upon (including euthanasia, guilt, ecology), the film is driven mainly by the audiovisual. Very beautiful, stylized images, cool use of color, and a dreamy soundtrack that fits in nicely. The few scenes in which the plot does take over could have been a bit more subtle for me, but on the other hand there were a few very good scenes in which it flows nicely, such as at the house party. Beautiful ending too, a worthy conclusion to the film.

That this would not be a film for the general public is logical, but I find it a sincere shame that the film apparently has not (yet?) found its audience. It would be a shame if this would be the only excursion of the sisters into cinema, because the potential is certainly there. A solid 3.5*.

PS A bit of a strange tip perhaps, but it often reminded me of Behind the Redwood Curtain. That is a documentary, but with similar beautifully shot images in the Californian forests under an ambient soundtrack.

Hm, not really my thing. Visually there were some nice shots, but in terms of story I was left wanting. The film should have relied more on atmosphere.

Despite the cast including Kirsten Dunst and Pilou Asbæk, this couldn't really save the film.

For the enthusiasts.

Apart. Clearly not for the general public, and for lovers of off the beaten track. Now I certainly put myself in that last box, but I found this film difficult to get through. It is too slow and too abstract for me I think, I had trouble keeping my attention. Towards the end it does become a bit more interesting. Dunst is certainly nice to look at in all her dresses and her gaze. Her depressive role came out better in Melancholia. The film mainly has to rely on the beautifully intended images, but that certainly did not make up for everything.
